From another crime watch neighborhood, dated Nov 12th:

One of our neighbors had a knock on the door. A cable repairman needed access.
The Time Warner cable sign was on his white van. The neighbor let him in the back yard,
as he requested and she went back inside. When he left she noted her boombox and her
grass blower were missing.

Please be aware of fraudulent activity, do not allow anyone access to your property. Always
ask to see their badge. Ask to see their work order or call the company
to confirm they are
indeed supposed to be in your back yard.

FYI - The utility meter reader last week walked right past me without any acknowledgement. They
were not wearing any badge, nor were they in uniform. They tried to get through my locked gate.
I told them they did not need access to the back yard as they could read the meter over the fence.
Although they appeared legitimate carrying some sort of device, they were not wearing anything to
prove who they represented.

As crime rises we need to be ever more alert. Call the police. Unfortunately with the shortage of
police your call may not be placed as a high priority but do please make the call. The City needs
to be aware of the problem and if there is no report then they will assume all is well in SW Arlington.

Sorry to bring such concerning news but hopefully by keeping everyone updated we can prevent such
criminal activity from being repeated.

While on the subject of Door to Door "services" , as a reminder:
if someone comes knocking on your door, ask to see their permit to solicit door to door.
It's required by a city ordinanace. Asking them to see their permit will send a strong message
that we are aware of the law and keeping an eye out in our neighborhood.

Section 1.02 License Required
It shall be unlawful for any person, personally, by agent or as the agent of another, to engage in door-to-door
selling or itinerant vending in the City without a license therefore as provided in this chapter.

Section 1.10 Display of License
When engaged in door-to-door selling, the license required by this chapter shall be carried by the salesperson
and shall, upon request, be submitted to any police officer or citizen for examination. Otherwise, such license
shall be prominently displayed upon the premises or place where the business authorized there under is being
carried on or conducted.

Here's a great idea, by Carolyn Henderson of the
Northwest Heights Citizen on Patrol group:

Put your car keys beside your bed at night.

If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your
house, press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off; the
horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery
dies.

This tip came from a neighborhood watch coordinator.

When you come home; you start to put your keys away, think of this: It's a
security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no
installation. Test it.

The car alarm will sound from anywhere you press the button in your home;
will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with
the button on the key fob chain.

It works whether you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm
goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the burglar
or rapist won't stick around... after a few seconds the neighbors will be
looking out their windows to see who is out there. The criminal won't want
that.

REMEMBER to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot or
garage. The alarm can work the same way there.....

This is something that should really be shared with everyone.

Maybe it could save a life or a sexual abuse crime.

P.S. I am sending this to everyone I know because I think it is good idea.

Useful for Emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone.

My friends Mom has suggested to her Dad that he carry his car keys with him
in case he falls outside; and she doesn't hear him. He can activate the car
alarm; she'll know there's a problem.

Another good Safety tip!

ICE Campaign - "In Case of Emergency"

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory
but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our
closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people
attendingus would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there
are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an
emergency?
Hence this " ICE" (In Case of Emergency ) Campaign .

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during
emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the
population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or
persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE"
( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the
scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't
know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea
if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency
situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to
quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored
as "ICE."
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A
great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an
ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
Please forward this. It won't take too many "forwards" before everybody will
know about this. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at
rest. ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.
